After the onset of AIDS with all these new programs in place, individuals now with all types of disabilities have innumerable safety nets available to them if they are properly counseled and guided through the web of threads all leading to a reasonable and comfortable reality that can support them and their disabilities. Unfortunately far too many service providers, as well as people living with disabilities, have limited knowledge or are either unaware of the full range of benefits programs available. Furthermore, even where knowledge exists, most people still do not know how to integrate public and private benefits programs, perpetuating inequalities and limiting access to healthcare and financial support for their clients.
Service providers, those employed to offer meaningful benefits assistance, are often left in the painful position of having to learn on the job through trial and error, a problem that persists because training for health and income benefits counseling is neither included in degree programs nor made available for human service professionals. Therefore, newly diagnosed/disabled individuals are often at risk for extreme financial hardship, lack of medical care, and increased disability, all of which could be prevented through comprehensive benefits counseling and coaching.
Comprehensive benefits coaching and training can often prevent the likelihood that newly disabled individuals will experience extreme financial hardship, lack of medical care/medications, and increased disability. BEC training programs greatly impact the disability community and the bottom line is that our work helps to close the information gap and to end the needless struggle people face in trying to understand and access essential benefits, healthcare and critical medications.
